Paolo Nespoli

Paolo Nespoli was born in Milano and grew-up in Brianza. In 1977, after the high school, he is in the Military Army for eight years. As member of the Special Forces, in 1982-1984 participates to the Italian contingent of the Multinational Peace Force in Lebanon. When he comes back he leaves the Army and signs up to the Polytechnic University of New York and obtains a Bachelor in Aerospace Engineering and a Master in Aeronautics and Astronautics. The University of Florence recognizes him a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

In 1989 comes back to Italy to work as project engineer, and finally is recruited as an instructor by the European Space Agency in Cologne, Germany. In 1998 he is selected as European astronaut and seconded to the Johnson Space Centre of Houston in Texas, where he is trained in the NASA astronaut corps.

He flies in space for the first time in 2007 on board of the Space Shuttle Discovery STS-120, short mission intended to build the International Space Station. With Russian spacecraft Soyuz, first in 2010 and then in 2017, he comes back to the spatial station for two long-term missions: Expedition-26/27 and Expedition-52/53. In his 20-year career as an astronaut he totaled 313 days of stay in the space.

In 2019 Paolo Nespoli ended his collaboration with ESA and today he is an intense lecturer all over the world.
